We Care for EyeCare America

Routine eye exams are important at every age!
Lehigh Valley Center for Sight is proud to be an EyeCare America volunteer!  As part of our service, we provide eye exams to people who qualify.  EyeCare America is a public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  Their mission is to preserve sight by raising awareness about eye disease and providing access to medical eye care.

Navy Care Packages from Center for Sight!

Holiday Packages for Troops at Sea

Just some of the goodies donated by the staff of LVC4S!
Thanks to the inspiration of Clinical Assistant Tabitha Boyer, LVC4S is supporting the Navy for Moms Holiday Project this year.  Tabitha has a special reason for supporting this effort, her son Damian joined the Navy following his graduation from Emaus High School this year.

The Navy for Moms Holiday Project started in 2009, and has provided thousands of packages to the men and women who will be away from home over the holidays.  This year, they have adopted two ships: The USS Harry Truman, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, and The USS Boxer, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship.

Proud Navy mom Tabitha, with her son Damian,
the inspiration for this project.

Tabitha's goal is to provide about 50 care packages to the men and women serving on these ships.  She and other Navy for Moms group members will be assembling the packages in November.  These caring women will help to make the holidays a little brighter overseas!

Thanks to the generous staff of Lehigh Valley Center for Sight for their dedication to support a charitable cause each month.  Past recipients of this generosity include the American Cancer Society, Autism Speaks, Cedarbrook Nursing Home, My Sister's Closet, and the Lehigh County Humane Society.

Happy 30th Anniversary!

Congratulations to Deb Sicher
on her 30th Anniversary with LVC4S!

Dr. Moran congratulates Deb on her anniversary.
It all started in 1983, when Deb joined Dr. Bill Trachtenberg was in private practice on 20th and Allen Street in Allentown.  In her 30 years with Dr. "T"   she has seen a great deal of growth at Lehigh Valley Center for Sight.   Dr. Moran joined the practice in 1993.   The practice was renamed Lehigh Valley Center for Sight in 1998, when Dr. Ahdieh and  Dr. Ross joined.

One thing that hasn't changed in thirty years is the expert and caring attention that she shows to her patients.   She is a Certified Ophthalmic Technician, and serves as our Contact Lens Specialist.

The doctors sent Deb beautiful flowers to mark the occasion.
"It is so rewarding to help a patient improve their sight!  I've worked with patients who were frustrated that they might never see clearly," she explains.  She knows that having good vision can change someone's life, and that's what keeps her going!

When she isn't working, Deb enjoys her grandchildren, riding motorcycles and traveling with her husband Dean.

Congratulations & thank you for 30-years of great service!

100 miles...City to Shore

Deb & Dean Sicher at the end of their
100 mile ride for Muscular Dystrophy.
Lehigh Valley Center for Sight's Deb Sicher took part in the Multiple Sclerosis Society's 100 mile City to Shore Bike Event in September.

If you are lucky enough to know Deb, you know that she is committed to the health and welfare of her patients.  Deb dedicated her ride to a number of her patients who have been affected by Multiple Sclerosis.  She wore their names on orange ribbons during the ride.

Raising money for Multiple Sclerosis has become an annual event for the Sicher family, who have logged over a thousand miles for the charity.  She notes that they are inspired by the people who gather along the route to offer encouragement and show their gratitude.

We feel very proud to have employees like Deb Sicher at LVC4S.  Congratulations to Deb & Dean on their achievement.

WEAR YOUR SUNGLASSES!

Your eye doctor has been telling you that sunglasses play an important role in protecting your eyes from the damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays.  Did you know that sunglasses can protect you from skin cancer too?

Sunglasses Protect your Eyes. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays increases your odds of getting cataracts, which cloud the lens of the eye and lead to diminished eyesight.  UV rays have also been tied to macular degeneration, which causes damage to the retina. Fair-skinned people with light color eyes, blue, green, grey, should be especially diligent about sunglass wear.
Sunglasses Protect your Skin too! The skin around the eyes is very fragile, and needs to be protected from the damaging rays of the sun.  Protection is needed from direct sunlight, as well as the sunlight that reflects off of water, sand & snow.   Sunglasses shield the delicate skin around your eyes, so think BIG when choosing your frames.

The Opticians at Fairmont Optical can help you select the best sunglasses for your vision needs.  We offer both regular & prescription sunglasses that can safely take you through every season of the year.

See well and be well with a great pair of sunglasses from Fairmont Optical!

Let's talk!

4
EYE
 EXAM
 TOPICS

Here is a quick list of things to discuss with your eye doctor at your next visit...

         1. Describe what eyewear you currently use.  It's important for your doctor to know what you wear, and what you don't wear.  Are you wearing protection when you play sports, sunglasses to reduce glare, or have you started wearing readers on top of your contacts?

2. Describe what you don't like about your current vision correction.  Be honest, talk about what's not working and why - there may be other options.

3. Describe your daily routine.  Do you spend the day on the computer, driving long distances, or working outdoors where it is dry and windy?

4. Don't forget to mention any special vision needs for your job, sports or hobbies!  Your doctor may have solutions that can save you from eye strain, and protection that can save your eyes from injury.

The doctors and staff of Lehigh Valley Center for Sight offer comprehensive eye care in a warm and friendly environment.  Our highly trained doctors work with the advanced technology to provide the optimal solutions to your eye care needs.

Has it been a while since you've had your eyes checked?  Call us for an appointment at 610-437-4988.  We have lots to talk about!

Answers to TOP 5 LASIK Questions

You have LASIK questions...
we have LASIK answers!

1.  How much time will I need to take off of work?
We do LASIK on Tuesday afternoons.  You can work the morning before your procedure, and come to the Laser Center in the afternoon.  Most patients take the next day off, however, some return to work on the very next day.

2.  What happens the day of my LASIK procedure?
You will be at the Laser Center for about 1 hour, and in the laser suite with the doctor for about 10 minutes. Your laser treatment is very quick - the average time is less than one minute!  When you go home, you will need to relax and keep your eyes closed for the rest of the day.

3.  How soon can I drive?
You can drive the next day.  In fact, you will be able to drive yourself to our office for your 1-day post operative appointment.

4. What about payment?  Is there financing available?
Payment for LASIK is due the Friday before your surgery.  We offer financing that allows you to pay for LASIK over 12-18 months with no interest.

5. How do I start the process?
Come in for a free LASIK Consultation with one of our three LASIK Surgeons:  Dr. Houman Ahdieh, Dr. Irena Cherfas or Dr. Mark Moran.  At your consultation, we will take some measurements and check your vision.  The doctor will evaluate your information and explain if LASIK vision correction is right for you.

We have early morning and evening appointments available.  Call our office 610-437-4988 to schedule.

Have more questions?  We have more answers...just call, or email LASIK@center4sight.com.

Quality Vision leads to Quality Workmanship

Mr. Richard Rogers holds the beautiful wooden
box that he made for his surgeon, Dr. Irena Cherfas.

Fine woodworking takes patience, a steady hand, great eyesight.  Thanks to Dr. Irena Cherfas and the staff of LVC4S, patient Richard Rogers has the eyesight that he needs to do the precise woodworking he enjoys.  When he came in for a recent appointment he brought a special gift that showed how well he can see...a handcrafted wooden candy box.

"This is what I need my eyes for!"  he told his cataract surgeon   Dr. Irena Cherfas. He choose a unique way to show his appreciation, with a gift that shows the improved quality of his eyesight!

This beautifully crafted work of art took over 20 hours to create. Mr. Rogers started the process by affixing a pattern to the blank wood block.  He then began to cut the wood with a Dremmel tool, and finished the cutting with a fine scroll saw.   The sides of the box are expertly fitted together to form the candy dish.  He said that everyone needs a hobby, and that woodworking makes him happy.

His very thoughtful gift is displayed at checkout station in our Allentown office, filled with candy.  Thank you to Mr. Rogers!  We appreciate your craftsmanship, and your very "sweet" gift.

Ophthalmology is so Cool...

The cover of the new Justin Timberlake release, "The 20/20 Experience", definitely caught our eye (pun intended)!   It features Justin Timberlake in a tuxedo looking through a phoropter. Although most of you have probably seen a phoropter you probably never knew it's name.

Picture yourself here - instead of JT

A phoropter contains many lenses which are changed as the patient looks through it at an eye chart.  We like to think of it as everyone's favorite game..."Which is better, one or two?"  The goal of the game is to get the patient to seeing their best, with the target of 20/20.

If you aren't seeing as well as you used to, make an appointment to come in for a complete exam.  We'll let you play the "Better one or two?" game, and give you a 20/20 experience (tuxedo is optional!)

LASIK gives a clear view from the Broadcast Booth

Lehigh Valley IronPigs radio announcer Jon Schaeffer's vision is sharper than ever after having LASIK surgery with Dr. Mark Moran of Lehigh Valley Center for Sight.  Jon, who celebrated his eleventh year in professional baseball in 2013, was back in the booth doing play-by-play just days after the surgery.

Dr. Moran visits Jon in the broadcast booth
at a recent IronPigs game to talk about the game
and Jon's LASIK procedure.
Great vision (along with a great voice!) is key to Jon's profession, and now thanks to Dr. Moran, he has both!  Jon explains, "As a play-by-play broadcaster, being able to see the action clearly, day or night, is crucial.  Prior to my LASIK procedure, I often had difficulties seeing the names and numbers on the backs of jersey's.  Thanks to Dr. Moran and his friendly and knowledgeable staff, I can now see all the action on the field."

Glare and halos at night were also a major vision problem that was caused by Jon's astigmatism.  "I used to struggle with nighttime driving, but the LASIK procedure has rectified that issue as well.  If you want to improve your vision and see results in just one day, there is not a better option than Dr. Moran and his staff at Lehigh Valley Center for Sight."

Dr. Moran was the first surgeon to perform laser vision correction in the Lehigh Valley.  In the past decade, he has seen advances in the procedure which have allowed him to treat a wider range of patients.  Dr. Moran comments, " A few years ago, Jon would have not been a candidate for LASIK surgery due to the astigmatism in both of his eyes.  Now, with Custom Vue LASIK, we can treat astigmatism with great success."

Call 610-437-4988 to schedule your FREE LASIK consultation. Early morning and evening appointments are available to see if LASIK can change the way you see the world.

What I did on my summer vacation...

Setting up in the Ross kitchen are pints & quarts
 of homemade sour cherry jam.
Wonder what our doctors are up to in their spare time?

When he's not spending time in the office or in surgery, Dr. Dan Ross spends some quality time in the kitchen.  An accomplished cook, Dr. Ross made some sour cherry jam this summer, from cherries picked from his own trees.

You might wonder what he does with all of that jam?  It may not be a big surprise that Dr. Ross is also an accomplished baker, specializing in artisan breads...which just happen to go well with cherry jam!

Who would have guessed that our resident retinal expert had such delicious hobbies!

LVC4S & the IronPigs

It was a beautiful night for baseball!
Office Clerk Darlene Kernechel had the honor of throwing out
the first pitch.  She was joined on the field by Ferris, FeFe and
LASIK Coordinator Bobbi Spain who cheered her on!

For the third time this year, LVC4S was the official sponsor of the August 2nd IronPigs game.   Our own Darlene Kernechel (an avid IronPigs fan with a great arm!) had the honor of throwing out the first pitch.

Dr. Mark Moran spent an inning up in the radio booth talking about baseball, and about LASIK vision correction.  LASIK is a timely subject in the booth...radio announcer Jon Schaeffer is enjoying new & improved eyesight this season after having LASIK with Dr. Moran.  Next up was a TV interview, where Dr. Moran talked about the range of services offered at LVC4S for every member of the family from children to seniors.

Dr. Moran talked about the outstanding staff and services of Lehigh Valley Center for Sight with the radio & TV audience.  Joining him in the booth was Physician Assistant, Chelsea Keehfuss, a long-time Phillies fan!

A fabulous fireworks display sponsored by LVC4S topped off the night for the sold out crowd at Coca-Cola Park!
